Genestrerio è un quartiere del comune di Mendrisio, situato a pochi minuti dal centro cittadino. Dal 2009, a seguito del progetto di aggregazioni comunali nel Mendrisiotto, Genestrerio è diventato, assieme ad Arzo, Capolago, Rancate e Tremona, un quartiere del Comune di Mendrisio.
Originariamente Genestrerio era un piccolo agglomerato di masserie sorte per ospitare famiglie di allevatori e coltivatori. Ancora oggi questo quartiere mantiene qualcosa della sua storia, perché accoglie molte famiglie che scelgono questa località per la conformazione pianeggiante del territorio, la tranquillità per crescere dei bambini e la vicinanza a tutti i servizi raggiungibili in pochi minuti.
Stando alla tradizione popolare, il nome di Genestrerio deriva dalle ginestre, piante un tempo molto diffuse nella regione della Campagna Adorna e che campeggiano a tinte dorate sullo stemma comunale assieme a foglie di tabacco e ad un grappolo d’uva, ovvero le principali coltivazioni agricole della regione.
